Making of Transformers Hot Rod Statue – Tsaber

Hello Everyone,

In this article I wish to explain the process of creating the HOT ROD STATUE inspired by the Transformers series. The fans have seen a couple of great designs and recreations of Hotrod from Threezero, XM studios and Imaginarium Arts. The designs were amazing and delicately created by master 3D sculptors. They all looked so epic and powerful. No one can deny those facts, however all designs (since 1986 till this day) lacked something very specific which is elegance. Hot Rod is a shiny, clean and elegant robot even when he becomes Rodimus Prime.

I remember growing up watching Transformers 1986 the animated movie, over and over. Most of the time, Hot Rod was displayed as a shiny robot or a sports car. For a while I wanted to create a 3D version of the Hotrod statue that depicts his true essence. I eventually found my reason and my challenge of this project.

Initially I began sketching and blocking the head since I was a little uncertain about the design of the body. Sketching the head gave me more confidence to find a specific look and shape for the character. Sometimes when we’re uncertain about a design, it’s better to start with parts that we’re most certain in order to assess our concept.

It’s a challenge to convert a 2d character into a 3D sculpture. I started with a general body shape and proportion. I tried to keep the design close to the classic look, while making sure the body joint articulations work perfectly. This was a stage that I worked slower than the rest of the project. I kept going back and forth to find the right body proportion.

Once I was ready, I began adding the details to Hot Rod. I preserved the classic elegant design of Hot Rod, but I wanted to upgrade him a little bit and make him more realistic. I still wanted everyone to notice Hot Rod at first glance, but yet he or she can notice the new design as well. For that reason I decided to paint the model as I was sculpting to avoid getting far from the original design.
